One Piece: Was That a Fairy Tail Reference?
Eiichiro Oda and Hiro Mashima are two manga writers whose friendship spans many years. Their shared sources of inspiration are shown throughout their work, resulting in many similarities between the One Piece and Fairy Tail series.
Fans of the series have pointed out the obvious references to One Piece in Fairy Tail, but the references to Fairy Tail in One Piece are a bit subtler and harder to spot. Found in the "Punk Hazard" and "Dressrosa" arcs of One Piece, there appear to be a few hidden references to Fairy Tail. While not confirmed, these Easter eggs were spotted by fans and backed by some rather compelling evidence.
The first Easter egg lies in Episode 602, "The Deadliest Weapon of Mass Destruction in History! Shinokuni!" during the "Punk Hazard" arc. While attempting to outrun a wave of Caesar Clown's poisonous gas, Brook, Zoro, Sanji, and Kin'emon spot a strange creature in the distance. After Sanji comments on the creature's lizard-like appearance, Zoro informs the group that what they're seeing is a dragon, leaving everyone in disbelief.
Refusing to believe Zoro's claim, Sanji asserts that dragons aren't real. Zoro assures Sanji that the mythical creatures somehow exist on Punk Hazard Island and recalls his earlier encounter with a much larger one. Zoro then presents the idea of riding atop the dragon to escape the fast-moving gas. In agreement, Sanji picks up his running speed to catch up to the creature, all while yelling, "Wait up, you fairy tale bastard!"
