Nasa’s Artemis 1, most powerful rocket in history, blasts off to moon

Image
Successful launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida follows scuppered attempts in August and September.  Two hurricanes, two months and a number of technical fixes since previous launch attempts were thwarted, and Nasa’s Artemis 1, the most powerful space rocket in history, is finally on course for the moon after lifting off from Florida early on Wednesday. The spacecraft, comprising the mighty Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and pioneering Orion capsule, lit the night sky as it rose from its Cape Canaveral launchpad at 1.47am ET. The 25-day, 1.3m-mile journey to the moon and back is Nasa’s first crew-capable deep-space mission for half a century. “On behalf of all the men and women across our great nation who have worked to bring this hardware together to make this day possible, and for the Artemis generation, this is for you,” the launch director, Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, said shortly after liftoff. It was the first time that the Nasa SLS rocket and Nasa Orion have flown together.

Climate justice gets harder as world population passes 8 billion

The world population surged past 8 billion people on Tuesday, the United Nations said, warning that more hardship is in store for regions already facing resource scarcity due to climate change. Whether its food or water, batteries or gasoline, there will be less to go around as the global population adds another 2.4 billion people by the 2080s, according to U.N. projections. "Every single person needs fuel, wood, water, and a place to call home," said Stephanie Feldstein, population and sustainability director with the Center for Biological Diversity. Resource pressure will be especially daunting in African nations, where populations are expected to boom, experts say. These are also among the countries most vulnerable to climate impacts, and most in need of climate finance. In sub-Saharan Africa, where some 738 million people already live without adequate food supplies, the population is projected to jump by 95% by mid-century, according to the Institute for Economics and Pe

Global population hits 8 billion as growth poses more challenges for the planet

The world’s population will reach 8 billion people on Tuesday, representing a “milestone in human development” before birth rates start to slow, according to a projection from the United Nations. In a statement, the UN said the figure meant 1 billion people had been added to the global population in just 12 years. “This unprecedented growth is due to the gradual increase in human lifespan owing to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine. It is also the result of high and persistent levels of fertility in some countries,” the UN statement read. Middle-income countries, mostly in Asia, accounted for most of the growth over the past decade, gaining some 700 million people since 2011. India added about 180 million people, and is set to surpass China as the world’s most populous nation next year. But even while the global population reaches new highs, demographers note the growth rate has fallen steadily to less than 1% per year. This should keep the world

One Piece: Was That a Fairy Tail Reference?

Image
Eiichiro Oda and Hiro Mashima are two manga writers whose friendship spans many years. Their shared sources of inspiration are shown throughout their work, resulting in many similarities between the One Piece and Fairy Tail series. Fans of the series have pointed out the obvious references to One Piece in Fairy Tail, but the references to Fairy Tail in One Piece are a bit subtler and harder to spot. Found in the "Punk Hazard" and "Dressrosa" arcs of One Piece, there appear to be a few hidden references to Fairy Tail. While not confirmed, these Easter eggs were spotted by fans and backed by some rather compelling evidence. The first Easter egg lies in Episode 602, "The Deadliest Weapon of Mass Destruction in History! Shinokuni!" during the "Punk Hazard" arc. While attempting to outrun a wave of Caesar Clown's poisonous gas, Brook, Zoro, Sanji, and Kin'emon spot a strange creature in the distance. After Sanji comments on the creature's
